How Old is the Game of Football?

Modern football originated in England in the late nineteenth century. Since then, many other countries have become major competitors with England in football. Although the NFL has not won a world championship game since, it has become a hugely popular and internationally recognized sport. For a professional football game to be considered "professional," several criteria must be met. First, it must be played in a country where the game is played, and is regulated by a governing body like the Association Football Federation of America or the United States Football Association. Secondly, it must be played on an irregular and periodic basis, rather than on a regular basis, like a traditional sports league. These criteria are important because the best teams do not earn big money, and therefore have to rely on sponsorship money and other such sources to remain competitive. John Brallier, who played football for the Chicago Bears for two years, went on to become a very famous coach and owner of the Chicago Cowboys. He was so successful that his name is still sung by fans in Chicago to this day. John B. Brallier also played another pivotal role in the history of the National Football League, being the architect of the salary cap. The cap allowed for professional athletes to receive paychecks based on their performance on the field, and not on their previous experience or salary. Today, football players still use the equipment designed for athletes of that time, and most teams prefer to use helmets that are similar to the helmets used by Brallier and the original footballers of the time. In fact, football helmets were banned from the Little League and high school athletic programs until recent years, when they were allowed again due to the tragic deaths of several young football players who were playing without a safety helmet.
